Serapes Blankets - Mexican Serapes - Yoga Blankets
Mexican serapes blankets are as rich in their history as they are in color. In its original form, the serape was intended as cheap accessible outer clothing first worn by the poorer working folk of Mexico and Guatemala.
Serapes refers to the traditional striped weave that makes up the Mexican blanket design of today. Over the hundreds of years, the Mexican blanket evolved from serapes, also known as zarapes or sarapes.
Popular with just about everyone, Mexican serapes blankets are a versatile textile. They are as much a hardy Yoga blanket, a picnic or beach blanket as an indoor decorative touch. Inside, Mexican serapes blankets add rich warmth and colorful accent to any room in the house.

Mexican serapes blankets are an ideal decorative touch to brighten up any room, and can be used as a throw, table cover, couch cover, bedspread or even a light floor covering or wall hanging! Because Mexican blankets are machine washable, they are also great for keeping your pet's favorite chairs and sofas free of hair and all the associated muckiness your beloved dogs and cats bring in!
The serapes blankets come in many different colors. The vibrancy of the serapes is created by dying each color strand separately before hand-looming to create striped color waves that seem to melt into each other. The largest stripe of the serapes is always the primary color and repeated throughout weave, along with complimentary colors. Because of the nature of the weave, each finished serape blanket is a beautiful, unique work of textile art.

Is it a Serape, Sarape, Saltillo, Yoga blanket or a Mexican blanket?
There seems to a variety of names which Mexican serapes blankets go by. They are sometimes called Sarapes, Serapes or Saltillos or just plain Mexican blankets. Why is that? Saltillo is the capital of the north eastern Mexican state of Coahuila, famous for its locally woven multi-colored blankets which for many are known simply as a Saltillo.
Sarapes is just a different spelling of Serapes. In its intended form, it refers to the traditional striped weave of the accessible outer clothing first worn by the poorer working folk of Mexico and Guatemala.
The technique to create these stunning Mexican serape blankets has been passed on through the generations and it is hard to find two serape blankets woven exactly the same. So, whatever you choose to call yours, the venerable Mexican serape blanket will bring a unique decorative touch and a splash of color to your home. Serapes blankets make a wonderful accessory to any piece of furniture or add vibrancy to any room in the house.
Serapes blankets also make for great Yoga blankets or even a great gift! Serapes are also great for accentuating furniture and adding some color and indoor Mexican decorating style. |
