About Mexican Serape Ponchos

Serapes were originally used like a poncho for the cooler climates and higher altitudes of the Mayan mountain villages where it can get cold at night. The serape provided warmth and protection against the elements. Serapes are known for their interwoven, striped colorful designs. The colors are typically warm and vibrant. The largest stripe is always the dominant color and is repeated throughout weave, along with secondary colors. A serape is usually made of a darker base color with smaller stripes or bands of colors. There are also serapes made in lighter color tones and softer shades. You may also find them in colors of the same shade as well.

The technique to create these stunning Mexican ponchos and serape ponchos has been passed on through the generations. Since Mexican ponchos are handmade on a loom, it's hard to find two woven exactly the same. This is what makes each serape poncho a unique piece of fabric art. So, whatever you choose to call yours, the venerable Mexican serape ponchos will bring a unique style and a splash of color to your outing or as a fun Mexican costume.
